•Week 40• (what)

40 weeks. Baby D 3.0, breaking trends and destroying expectations since 2018.

I could rant for a while about still being pregnant, but I'm trying to chill out so I'll keep this brief. Yes, history deceived us into believing she would be born a little early. We are all super anxious for this child to come out, for one reason or another, but...she's still in there. Obviously.

So that's all I have to say. Except, pray for me. As an individual who prefers minimal medical interventions, the last thing I want is to be overdue and feeling stressed that I'll be pushed into an induction.

•Week 38•

37 weeks, not quite awake yet.

38 weeks. I'm like, twice this big at the end of the day (also, new haircut! 🙌🏻).

I'm currently 38 weeks and 4 days, sitting up in bed because reclining is not an option yet. A seemingly harmless ice cream sandwich is trying to come back up as molten lava. All of my previous heartburn this pregnancy has been annoying but mild...holy cats, it hurts to breathe. Oh well, now I have time to write this, hopefully it's my last pregnancy update!

Yesterday and today I've been doing ALL THE NESTING. I don't remember ever getting the urge during Declan's pregnancy, and not this seriously with Isla's. I woke up yesterday morning with a crazy amount of energy...my house will never be close to spotless, but in the last two days I've cleaned more than I have in any of the last 9 months.

Usually I get Braxton Hicks contractions when I'm active, but this last week I've been having some at rest also. I'm hoping that's a good sign, and helping my poor overworked uterus prepare for labor. Because I can't remember to drink raspberry leaf tea and eat dates 4 times a day, ok? I just can't. Remembering to drink water is hard enough.

Total weight gain: 20 lbs. I had to go update my driver's license today, and the lady made sure I didn't use my current weight for their records 😂
Cravings: I can't think about food, it has betrayed me.
Miss anything? Snuggling my kids in my lap, and everything else I could do before.
Movement: It's basically a 24/7 Riverdance.
Highs/Lows: Nesting energy, it has helped me feel so much more ready to have this baby/Tonight's heartburn, ugh.
Looking forward to: Whatever tomorrow holds. Hopefully more cleaning, I'm really enjoying it haha.

•Week 35•

My hair officially reaches my bump. While I LOVE my extra-long, extra-voluminous best-thing-about-pregnancy hair, it's not going to be so fun when it starts falling out. So it's getting a big chop in a couple weeks!

Mayday, Mayday! Only 4-5 weeks left! My mind wants to be prepping and nesting like crazy, but my body is like, "NO. SIT DOWN." I've done a decent amount I guess, getting the bassinet ready in our room, washing and putting away 6 months worth of clothes, and spending all my mental energy trying to remember what having a newborn is like. But what I REALLY need to do the next few weeks is
1) Put meals in the freezer.
2) Spend time with my kids, you know, the two offspring I already have?
3) Sleep.
4) Stay off Amazon.

Goals.

Jk about that last one though. #primeforlife

Ugh, pregnancy. I wonder if my body would feel differently if this wasn't my 3rd baby in 4 years. Like, my abdominals probably look like spaghetti noodles. Just trying to stand up straight is so hard! I'm carrying this baby pretty low, so my center of gravity is also very low, making every movement extremely awkward. My poor kids just want to be outside and swing for hours, but mama's back is done after 15 minutes. Somebody invent an automatic swing-pusher, PLEASE.

Kevin has been working a ton since my last post, he's probably had 3-4 days off in the last 4 weeks, with another full week to go. It's just how it is this time of year, but man, it is tough. For everyone!

Total weight gain: 16-17 pounds.
Cravings: I haven't been very hungry lately, this baby is taking up a lot of space!
Miss anything? Sleep. Definitely sleep.
Movement: Still tons, all the time.
Highs/Lows: Any day Isla takes a nap is an extreme high, getting sweet bargains on kid stuff for fall and winter/Kevin working constantly, my social child needing to get out of the house when I don't want to (which is pretty much always).
Looking forward to: Maybe some cooler weather, please? And maybe that burst of superpower nesting energy, please?

•Weeks 26-30•

26 weeks, backache all the time! And it's too hot not to topknot. #mombunforlife

Wait, I'm 30 weeks??? Those last two months went crazy fast, and it's only two more months until we meet our girl! Commence freaking out.

The super awesome thing is, aside from diapers and fun extra things, there's nothing to buy! All Isla's clothes should be the right season, unless baby is extremely tiny or freakishly huge. I guess weirder things have happened. They told me at the ultrasound she was measuring a week small, but at this point who knows?

The main thing I wanted to accomplish this summer was to get Declan day-trained to use the potty. We're at 4 weeks now and he's doing great! He'll occasionally have an accident, (most often when he's busy playing outside) but as long as I keep an eye on his fluids and prompt him to go at certain times, most days are dry! I'm super pumped to have a break from diapers, and that I won't have to have two in diapers again!

Bumpin' into the 3rd trimester at 28 weeks! Up at Horsehead Lake. Also I feel like I'm doing duck lips, completely unintentional.

We had a really fun vacation over the 4th of July at Horsehead Lake, where we've gone the last 3 out of 4 years. It's always great to spend time with extended family, (who are so gracious and generous!) but this time was definitely the easiest with the kids being a little bit older. Plus they slept well and it was just awesome to sit back and watch them have a blast! The weather was really hot, but I was able to escape to a little A/C in the cottage when I needed to.

29 weeks. Super pregnant.

Sorry if you hate bump pictures, haha. I'm feeling a little emotional these days about this probably being my last pregnancy. (I only say probably because accidents do happen, haha.)

We're gearing up for turnover season, which starts this week. Kevin has a LOT of out of town work this year, which I'm not excited about. Except for a visit to the farm next week, I'm not planning on trying to do a lot...wrangling two toddlers in public places is hard enough by myself, add being pregnant and 80+ heat every day and it quickly turns into insanity.

Oh, one more quick thing. Declan has started acknowledging my belly...he puts his hand on it and waits for me to say "Is that your baby sister?" He says "Yeah!" It's super cute. And at least 5 times a day Isla says "Tell me if you feel the baby kicking, ok?" She'll sit there with her hand on my belly waiting for a kick, then squeals and laughs when she feels one.

Total weight gain: 14-15 lbs 🙌🏻
Cravings: Fruit and ice cream! Typical for summer though.
Miss anything? Not hating pants. Anything with a waistband is the worst.
Movement:  SO MUCH. The doc at my last appointment reminded me that subsequent babies have a lot more room to keep turning and flipping later in pregnancy. She seems to be staying head down, which is awesome! Being able to visibly see her move around is a new experience for me, really cool, but also uncomfortable sometimes.
Highs/Lows: Vacation, taking down the wall in our kitchen and making this house our own!/The first few days of potty training, the summer heat, being kept up late by lots of savage kicking.
Looking forward to: Going up north...NOT looking forward to solo parenting for basically 6 weeks. But after it's over, it'll almost be baby time!

•Weeks 21-22•

I'm currently laying (lying? I can't ever get them straight.) on the couch watching my belly jump...it's the first time I've noticed being able to see it from the outside!

Last week we had our anatomy ultrasound, and Baby D 3.0 appears perfectly healthy! It was nice timing to find that out right before Mother's Day, another reassurance and reason to thank God for everything He has given us.

A couple days later we had our first (and last, haha) gender reveal party...with our other two babies we found out during the ultrasound, but decided to do something different for the tiebreaker! The original plan was to shoot Kevin with paintballs (the correct color put in by my dad, who was the first to read the gender from the top secret envelope). However, since it's been over a decade since I've played paintball, I forgot that CO2 tanks generally leak when you leave them screwed into the guns. Unfortunately, Kevin needed to make sure that my aim wasn't going to leave him maimed for life, so we did a little target practice on Monday, and by Friday the CO2 was gone. So my dad left the party to buy some emergency silly string, and that's how Kevin narrowly escaped being shot for the first time.

Foiled plans aside, we're having a GIRL!

We're all very happy, although Isla has been sad all week because she thought the baby was coming that day. She can't wait for her baby sister!

21 weeks
(when your dress doesn't show off the baby)

(when you try to get your 3 year old to take an artsy picture of you)

22 weeks

Total weight gain: 9-10 lbs.
Cravings: Nachos, chocolate. And margaritas, see below.
Miss anything? Alcohol. I don't drink very much normally, but I always miss it when I'm pregnant!
Movement: Lots of little hand jabs, no big kicks yet.
Highs/Lows: Getting settled in Eaton Rapids, and finding out another princess is on her way!/SO. MUCH. RAIN.
Looking forward to: A visit to Grammy and Grampy's farm, and Declan's 2nd birthday!

•Week 15 (17)•

Back again! I'm actually 17 weeks today, but I took my 15 week picture on time and I still look the same so...it counts!

This pregnancy started out with a bad sinus cold, pounding headaches, and crazy pain in my mouth that I thought was my wisdom teeth, but ended up being "pregnancy gingivitis". The rest of the first trimester was similar to the other two: fatigue and queasiness. More food aversions than with Declan, but no severe nausea, thankfully. But with Kevin working in Wyoming for 10 days at a time, I spent as much time resting at home as I could.

Isla is so excited for the baby! She would like a sister, so we have to keep reminding her that God picks the perfect baby for us, and He might give us another boy.

Declan is a super cuddler, and has to sit in my lap whenever possible. I'm nervous about what will happen when he gets evicted by a growing bump!

Kevin and I feel so blessed with another precious life to care for, and a healthy pregnancy so far! We are eager to meet the final addition to our family (unless we decide to adopt sometime down the road). Also, we're close to buying a new home in Eaton Rapids with plenty of room for 3!

^^^^8 weeks to 15 weeks^^^^

Total weight gain: 5 lbs
Cravings: None really, except one week when all I wanted was Chinese.
Miss anything? With two small children, I'm definitely missing some energy!
Gender prediction: Leaning toward girl, but no strong inclinations.
Movement: Since 11.5 weeks!
Highs/Lows: Short OB visits since this isn't my first rodeo, finding our dream property, a short but fun trip to sunny Las Vegas/spending so much time without Kevin, but he's done with WY trips now!
Looking forward to: Moving next week and closing on both houses, ultrasound in less than 3 weeks!

Two

Four weeks ago, my first baby turned two. Right now she is growing and changing at an astonishing pace, and I don't want to forget a thing. But I know my memory isn't that good, so now I can always be reminded of...

How she squints her eyes, scrunches up her nose and says "Keese!" when I'm trying to take a picture.

How instead of an emphatic "Uh-HUH!", she's started to say "Yah!" like a Swede.

How she has memorized parts of certain books, and reads them out loud.

How if I'm singing a song from a movie or a show that she watches, she recognizes which one the song is from.

How if I'm singing something she doesn't recognize, she stops me and asks me to sing Itsy Bitsy Spider instead.

How she says "Kay, bu-dah!" (It's okay, brother!) when Declan is crying.

How after watching the Summer Olympics, she started swimming in the bathtub.

How she drags around the step stool, so while I change Declan's diaper, she can pinch his cheeks.

How she somehow has learned to say thank you, or rather "Keek you!" at all appropriate moments. Also whenever she hands YOU something.

How she is more enthusiastic when talking about cake, than when actually eating it.

How her hair is always tangled.

How she pretends to race, and counts down "One...two...ONE!" or "Free...free...FREE!"

How "hugging" her brother turns into a bellyflop on top of him.

How she runs to help me unload the dishwasher and put wet clothes in the dryer.

How she says "munny" (bunny) and "mana" (banana) even though she says "book" and "baby" and plenty of other "b" words just fine.

How big she reaches for something high up in the pantry, and always does a little jump, like that will help.

How expressive her sounds are. "Hmmmm..."
"Wheeeee!"
"Huh?"
"Wwoooww!"

How every morning, first she asks where her brother is, and then tells me she's hungry.

How she's usually hungry for crackers but not a lot of other things.

How putting her in a pair of jeans made her look so much older.

How she loves to try to put on her shoes, and clunks around the house with them half on.

How she puts stickers on her nose and leaves them there for hours.

How she tells me I'm cute after I get dressed.

How divine it is to snuggle with her on the couch, because having a still moment is a rare gift.

How much her brother obviously adores her.

How she loves playing games with her daddy and riding on his shoulders.

How much we love every bit of Isla Florence.

[Week 38-39]

Yesterday I had a false labor scare, which did two things: it made me kick my butt into gear to get prepared for this baby, and it made me realize how much I do NOT want to give birth again. Like seriously. It's not fun!

Anyway, I was woken up (actually I wasn't quite asleep yet) about 1am with lots of contractions, even after I chugged a bunch of water and laid down again. Almost immediately I started shivering, which happened like crazy the last 5 hours of my labor with Isla, which made me even more nervous. It was too early, I wasn't expecting anything like this for another week! Feeling a little freaked out, I got up, continued doing laundry that I had started earlier, dug the infant car seat out of the basement, and made a list of things I needed to add to my hospital bag. Around 3:30 I laid down on the couch and dozed off for about an hour and a half. As soon as Kevin got up, I started gathering things together. I was so unprepared! Mostly in the food category, I had hardly put anything in the freezer yet. Also, I was supposed to get my hair done yesterday morning, which I ended up canceling to be on the safe side. SO SAD! But by about 10am, the contractions were still so inconsistent and not progressing, that I realized it probably wasn't actually happening. Big sigh of relief. And frustration, because I really wanted some cool hair.

Since then, I've packed our bags, put 6 more meals (plus a bunch of burritos!) in the freezer, washed the dusty car seat cover, and cleaned up the baby's room as best as I can. While taking care of a tantrum-throwing, sick and sometimes vomiting toddler. Whew! The hospital is going to feel like a vacation! Ha. Jk.

So no baby yet, but it should be soon! I decided to grab (maybe) one more bump shot this morning, mostly because I'm in love with this shirt.

[Week 36]

OMG this baby is coming so soon! I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it. Kevin brought up a suitcase from the basement a few days ago so I could pack it for the hospital...it's still empty. I still feel like I have plenty of time, except I don't!
I've started making some freezer meals, and have a huge list of things to stock up on next month. And I'm pretty prepared with the baby essentials, although Little Brother might have to deals with things like pink towels and swaddles...sorry, son.
I couldn't resist painting some more trees, so Baby D 2.0's room now has a couple of pine trees, soon to be joined by a fox and an owl! It'll be a sad day when the kids are older and they want to change their rooms...but a good thing that Kevin uses a quality primer, because it's going to need it, haha. I had to put 4 coats of paint on those trees!

My hair never actually looks like this, I had just taken it out of a topknot. It's so unmanageably long, I can't wait for something new and shorter!
I just read a thing that said you should ideally wean your child from a pacifier between their 1st and 2nd birthdays...ha. We'll see. This girl's moods have been quite volatile lately, and I feel like I'll do absolutely anything for some peace.

I love her hands while she's looking at her little self in the mirror! 💜

Total weight gain: Despite the arrival of ice cream season...19 lbs.
Miss anything? Not having to make the decision: Eat or breathe comfortably?
Movement: Plenty of hiccups, and he's still bopping around a lot even though it must be so cramped!
Highs/Lows: Ice cream season/Aching feet, Kevin being away 8 days over the last 2 weeks.
Looking forward to: Our 4th wedding anniversary, and getting my hair done!! And...birth, I guess? Just kidding.

[Week 32]

I'm drawing a blank...what to write? Not much is new since 4 weeks ago. The weather is nicer, a little sunny vitamin D is a welcome change! My sewing machine is camped out on the kitchen table, and I'm trying to get as many of my projects done as I can. The weeks are flying by!
Total weight gain: About 16 lbs.
Miss anything? Going to bed and actually being able to sleep...it's a dance party in my stomach from 10-12pm.
Movement: I'm getting pummeled every time he wakes up!
Highs/Lows: Beautiful weather, healthy baby, getting baby projects done, still sleeping fairly comfortably with my fantastic preggo pillow/HEARTBURN, Isla teething, Braxton-Hicks when I walk any faster than a stroll.
Looking forward to: My BFF's gender reveal party! And my brother/SIL's college graduation.

[Week 28]

It's spring! This evening we were outside with the glorious sun, pulling Isla around the neighborhood in her new wagon. She was thrilled, until we were 5 minutes from home and she got antsy. We've both had colds this week, but nothing stops her from moving!
Today is the first day since my last appointment (which was 3 days ago) that I've been able to use my arm without wincing. I forgot how much the Tdap booster sucks. And brilliant me had the nurse use my right arm, because I usually hold Isla on my left side, but forgot that I sleep on my right side. Not good. Live and learn!
Also, the lighting is this picture is terrible. But look at my sweet shirt! (Lularoe!)

Total weight gain: About 13 lbs.
Cravings: I should just take this question out, since I don't have any abnormal cravings...
Miss anything? Having a normal center of gravity.
Movement: Tons, this little guy is very active!
Highs/Lows: My parents coming to visit, buying Baby D 2.0 a load of clothes at a mom2mom sale, no gestational diabetes!/Having a cold right now (ugh), my body getting slower, and feeling more cumbersome as I get bigger! I've been grunting a lot, haha.
Looking forward to: Easter Sunday and giving Isla her first Easter basket! Also planning out Baby D 2.0's room...there may be more tree-painting in my future :)

[Week 24]

(Mostly written 2/25)
What do you know, it's been 5 weeks! We just had a big snowstorm yesterday, at least a foot, probably more (9.6 inches, apparently). Considering that it's been in the balmy 50's several times this February, it's a pretty big deal. Especially for Isla, who loves to sit in the snow. She can't really walk in it, so she just sits.
I've been feeling pretty energetic lately. So much so that I have so far deep-cleaned the bathroom, cleaned out the hallway closet, cleaned out my closet, started a new sewing project, organized the pantry, and done about a million loads of laundry (as of 3/1 I'm also organizing all our baby clothes. I have more gender-neutral items than I thought! Mostly Spartan stuff, haha).

Total weight gain: 8-9 lbs. I'm telling the truth.
Cravings: Nope. Well, chocolate, but that's the norm.
Miss anything? Going barefoot!
Movement: He's still able to do somersaults, not totally comfortably on my end though!
Highs/Lows: First night away this past weekend, and I got my first facial! Also, our family room is finished, and nesting is awesome./Trying to transition to one nap a day for Isla...I never know what to expect from her. Also, finding out Amazon's free shipping threshold for non-Prime members increased from $35 to $49. That made me way more upset than it should have, haha.
Looking forward to: Hmm, there isn't anything exciting happening in the near future. Getting my gestational diabetes screen over with. Bleh...

[Week 19]

I guess I could wait until 20 weeks, and then post every 5 weeks like I did with Isla. But, I don't do well with deadlines these days. So I'll post when I have an "I feel like it" moment. Plus, we got to find out the gender early this time! Only by like a week, because my due date is actually later than what is on my paperwork. That says June 9th, the ultrasound says June 12th, I say June 15th...but really, all that matters is what the baby says.
It's a boy!

Let's see...info...since I've been slacking for a while. So let's just copy the fun little questions from last time, shall we?

Total weight gain: 6-7 lbs. Compared to 14 lbs at 20 weeks the last time, it sounds nice. But let's be honest, I did NOT get myself very healthy before getting pregnant again, and started out at a higher weight. Something about having an emotional, needy child and just trying to survive.
Cravings: Nothing specific, I just want to eat everything all the time! But I can't, because we're trying to teach Isla that she can't eat everything all the time (and she would). I think I just figured out why I haven't been gaining as much weight...
Miss anything? Not specific to pregnancy, but I miss friends. Our life feels really isolating right now.
Gender prediction: Already know it's a boy! I didn't try to guess this time, since I was super wrong before.
Movement: Lots, since 13 weeks! So far, this guy feels mild-mannered. Maybe wishful thinking, haha.
Highs/Lows: Yay, our baby looks perfect, and he's a boy! Our basement family room is almost done/Winter, isolation, teething and the exercising of free will.
Looking forward to: Umm, idk, spring?? *sigh* Since it's only January I'll pick something else. Oh yeah, spa trip with my BFF next month!

(I don't have an updated picture, since most days I wear whatever I slept in. This was at 17 weeks.)

Baby D 2.0

It's a different experience, being pregnant for the second time. People say you won't even have time to think about it, that all your attention is still on your first child. This is partially true, I definitely don't have as many moments to just stop, think, and wonder. Most of my moments are spent making sure my daughter is clean and fed, her little mind is growing and learning, and she is being disciplined in a firm but loving way. After all that, sometimes I have a few seconds to reflect.

However, what my reflecting has revealed is unsettling to me.

Being a laid-back person has served me well so far in life. Sure, I have social anxieties and insecurities like every introvert/human being. But in most situations, I'm easygoing and relaxed.

In marriage, my husband and I rarely argue, because (and I know this sounds terrible) not much matters to me enough to argue about it. And because I married a smart, capable, helpful, good-looking man. I don't want to say marriage is easy, but it hasn't been hard either.

As a mom, being laid-back has saved me from ultimate exhaustion and frustration (excluding the newborn stage, when this is INEVITABLE). My baby is eating crumbs off the floor? Nbd, I sure as heck am not sweeping twice a day. She isn't crawling yet at 9 months...so? I won't have to carry her for her whole life. My point is that I think I have a fairly realistic view of life, people, and the limit of my abilities. Which helps me not worry a lot.

But all that goes out the window. Because even though "not much matters to me", my family matters to me. My daughter matters to me. And my tiny unborn son matters to me, but the difference is that now I am acutely aware of how much.

Before my girl was earth side and in my arms, I had no idea how fiercely I would love her. Having a baby was just a vague idea. And this change isn't something I'm even going to attempt to explain to someone who isn't a parent yet, because that would require a level of emotional depth and reflection that I just don't have energy for. I'll just say that it's so much bigger than you can imagine, and totally mind-blowing. And the fact that it's just a shadowy reflection of how much God loves us is unfathomable (is that a word?) to me.

This is unsettling because now that I know what it's like, I already have these crazy, protective instincts and intense love for my son. I would do anything to ensure that he is safe. But I can't do anything. He's still on the inside, hidden away from me where I can't see. I'm grateful for technology, which allowed us to see him today, and by all appearances, he is strong and healthy. It was an agonizing 19 weeks waiting for the good report, and it will be another agonizing 21 before he's in our arms.

Isla-Bird

October 2nd, two days before my due date.

2:00 am. I am awake. This isn't out of the ordinary, in the weeks previous I occasionally had insomnia for whatever reason…anxiety, weird scary dreams, not being able to roll over in bed without shooting pains in my back. I read for a couple hours then go back to bed, but still can't sleep.

6:00 am. I start having contractions…I never had contractions that early in the morning before, and they were coming regularly. Husband wakes up for work. He kisses me good morning and I say "Don't freak out. I'm having contractions, and we'll probably need to go to the hospital today." I tell him to go to work, and I'll keep him updated. He seems pretty calm.

10:00 am. I call my OB's office to talk to a nurse. My contractions were consistently 3-4 minutes apart, but were only lasting about 45 seconds. Every one made me stop what I was doing and breathe through it. The nurse's advice: You'll know when you need to go. It will feel overwhelming and you won't be able to talk through it." I eat a banana.

11:00 am. I call Kevin. "You should probably come home soon, because I think I'll want to go soon." Every few minutes I have to lean into the couch and squeeze my eyes shut really tight. I imagine baby might be as uncomfortable as I am, being ejected into the world so slowly. Kevin races home, ready to go. "I said soon, not now."

1:30 pm. We arrive at the hospital. I had pre-registered, so checking in is fairly painless. A nurse takes me back to a triage room, does a cervical check, and velcros the two monitors around my belly. After laboring for 7 hours at home, I am only at 1 cm. Grr.

2:30 pm. Still only at 1 cm. A nurse and a resident tell me "You're only in the very early stages of labor, this could go on for days. These are very mild contractions." I want to wring someone's neck. Mild my ***. Just because the stupid monitors are barely picking up my contractions! And having to lay there is not helping, I am trying so hard not to cry. If I'm not going to have this baby today, there is no way I can do this without meds. They're telling me this is "mild" pain, but it's already so intense.

5:00 pm. I finally get to walk around! After being in the triage room for over 3 hours...they wanted to keep monitoring me because baby's heart rate was going down with contractions. Giving me a bag of fluid helped a little, and I progressed to 3 cm, so they decided to admit me. I get up, go to the bathroom, and start walking around the halls. Walking around with an IV pole is harder than it looks! And even though we're on the maternity unit, I get asked "Are you okay?" multiple times. I guess seeing a woman in labor can be alarming for some people, but sheesh. I lean against railings, chairs, whatever is around with my contractions. Kevin tries rubbing my back, but the counter-pressure makes me feel worse, so he holds my hand instead.

6:00 pm. We get to the labor and delivery room. Walking was getting too painful. The nurse who admits me is funny and straightforward, but it's almost shift-change, so I try not to get too attached. My teeth start to chatter, and she tells me "the shakes" are totally normal, just surging hormones. She brings me a cherry Popsicle and some ice, but I don't want to eat anything. I find out that one of my favorite doctors is working tonight. With this hospital's system, there was a good chance I would have to deliver with a doctor I'd never even met, so this is a relief. And lucky me, I get two nurses! One is on her last day of training, and she is wonderful.

7:00ish pm. The anesthesiologist tells me that because I have a "mass in my brain" (a microadenoma on my pituitary gland), she won't give me an epidural, because it can mess with intercerebral pressure and all that fun stuff. Now, I don't want meds, but I still want the option, in case this labor goes on for hours and hours. The nurses let the doctor know, who tells me that a microadenoma shouldn't be an issue, and he would talk to the anesthesiologist. Meanwhile, I bounce on the birthing ball, trying the breathe the pain away. It doesn't really work.

8:00ish pm. I have to have a neurology consult. The anesthesiologist wants the OK that my brain won't explode before she gives me an epidural (my words). Not sure who they sent, but he doesn't seem very comfortable around a woman in labor. I have to lay flat on my back and stare at one spot on the ceiling while he shines a penlight in my eyes for way too long. This is incredibly difficult and uncomfortable since I'm having contractions every 60 seconds, and there's a strange man really close to my face.

9:00ish pm. I get in the shower. The room oscillates between freezing and sweltering, and I just want some consistency. The shower is tiny, but big enough for the birthing ball. The warm water streaming down my back made me the most relaxed and comfortable I'd been all day. I wonder, if my water breaks while I'm in here, how would anybody know?

10:00ish pm. 6cm. "Only 6?" I moan.  "That's really good!" My sweet nurse says. It's time for more monitoring. She hooks me up, I decide to stay in bed for this round. I'm getting really tired.

10:20ish pm. Kevin is hungry, and is about to walk out the door to go get some food. My water breaks, and I politely yell for him to get somebody. The pressure becomes much more intense.

Time is a blur. I definitely don't look at the clock after this point. I am 8cm. The baby doesn't like being born, her heart rate drops. The nurses help me on my hands and knees, no change. I put on oxygen, no change. A nurse puts in a fetal scalp monitor to try to get a better read on the baby. This whole time, the external monitors have barely been able to pick up contractions, and now they can't get her heartbeat, either. A few minutes later, I have to push. "She's 10, she's complete." The doctor and the resident come in, but they stand back. There are 3 nurses talking to me, getting everything ready. Shaking and shivering for 5 hours has left me feeling so weak and unstable, but they help hold me. 1...2...3...4 pushes, some screaming, and she's out.

The two of us is now the three of us, and nothing will ever be the same.

~Week 35…36~

80's day…no really, my mom wore this shirt in the 80's.

Yeah, I'm past 36 weeks now. So at this rate, the next post will probably involve a newborn baby! Yay! (sorry my head is cut off, I still don't have a good mirror situation)

The past few weeks have been great. Last month my BFF threw me an Up North shower (despite being a newlywed of only 5 weeks!) which was so much fun! It had a baby bird theme, and while I don't have any other pictures at the moment, I do have a picture of the cake topper before I tried to eat it…so cute!

Then I finished up my last few days of work…such a relief, the last couple months of working were so stressful and painful! My hip/back pain has decreased dramatically since quitting!

My husband's crazy, busy, month-long job finally ended at the end of August. It's been fantastic just being able to spend some time together, and finishing some baby projects that I couldn't do by myself. (who am I kidding, he does most of the work when it comes to projects... I "help")

Then just this weekend, I had another shower here in Lansing, put on and attended by the coolest ladies ever!

Baby shower #2! (Sorry shower #1, I don't have any pictures of you)
They went with the "Woodland Creatures" theme that I'm doing for my nursery. Speaking of, here's a picture of my pretty-much-finished wall of birch trees!

They still need a little bit of touching up, if I ever get around to it. Right now I have more important projects to give my attention to. Like staying sane.

This active little bird is around 20 inches long, and over 6 pounds now. My belly definitely feels the difference, too. It hasn't gotten a lot bigger, but it's a lot more cramped in there. In fact, I might have to stand up right now because she just stuck a foot up in my right lung. The best news though, is that she's head down and ready to go! The doctor told me it didn't feel like she was going to flip…not sure how he could feel that, but I'll take it.

Only 4 more weeks!!!

Total weight gain: 28 pounds. I didn't gain anything in like a 3 week stretch…then went up 3 pounds in one week! Hey there, stretch marks.
Cravings? Some of that raspberry pie left over from my shower ;)
Miss anything? Sleeping straight through the night. HAHA that won't happen again for years!
Movement: Random bouts of hiccups, day and night. When she stretches out her arms, it almost feels like a hug :)
Highs/lows: Baby showers, feelin' the love, not working, getting stuff done finally/Being wide awake in the middle of the night, random emotional outbursts.
Looking forward to: This little girl making her first appearance! Hopefully not for a few more weeks, but I'm getting anxious to see her.

~Week 30~

Ok, so it's actually 31 weeks! Slacking. But hey, I only have to post maybe two more of these 5-week updates! Yaaaaaaaaay! Also, AAAAAAHHHHHHH!

Are you kidding me? This is ridiculous, I'm so not ready yet. My picture this week is so terrible because we moved (!) 4 weeks ago and both my mirrors are still in the spare room. How can I have a baby if my mirrors aren't even hung??

Haha, I'm just kidding. Kind of. I know there's probably still going to be a lot unfinished two months from now. I just hope most of it's done by then.

Alright, down to business. As always, my resources are very inconsistent, so I'm just going to guess…Baby Birdie is approximately 16 inches long and a whopping 3.5 pounds! And she's been throwing her weight around the last few days. It's quite jolting, I think she's getting cramped! "Let me out!" It's crazy how big she's gotten in such a short time, and how much bigger she still needs to grow. In 9 weeks no less. Goodness.

Whew, I am hot right now. It's about 80 in here, and no AC yet :/ We put a fan in the window at night to blow in the cool air, which keeps the house pretty comfortable until about 3pm. Thankfully we haven't had very many super hot days yet!

Total weight gain: 23 pounds.
Cravings? Not really. I just always want to eat, but already feel full!
Miss anything? Being able to get up from the couch without an act of Congress.
Movement: BIG TIME. Kevin has felt her several times, but she won't kick for anyone else. Stinker.
Highs/Lows: My BFF's wedding a few weeks ago, having awesome friends to throw me baby showers, not having GD, still sleeping fairly comfortably/My great-grandma's funeral, Kevin is working every day for a straight month, getting oh-so tired even though I'm sleeping fine.
Looking forward to: Baby showers! And August 25th, my LAST DAY OF WORK!!!!!

~Week 25~

What, another 5 weeks already? We're almost to the 100 day countdown!

Baby Birdie is apparently in the cauliflower/eggplant category now. (The standard measures for babies in the womb are fruits and vegetables, in case you weren't aware.) Some resources say she's about 9 inches long, others say as much as 14 inches, so it's really anyone's guess. They all are pretty consistent with weight though, at about 1.5 pounds. Only 8.5 to go. (I'm just mentally preparing myself.)

I'm very thankful for air conditioning. All of this increased blood supply/decreased lung capacity nonsense means on the hot days, I overheat just walking from room to room. Ah, summer. Our new house is cooler than this one, but the central air is currently broken (surprise!), so we need to get it fixed ASAP. Hopefully before we move in!

Time has been going by pretty quickly, but 15 more weeks still seems too long. It's probably a good thing though, I am not at all prepared for Birdie to be here yet! As much as I want to hold her and stare at her beautiful little face, there's a lot that still needs to be done. Like packing, ugh…

Total weight gain: 17 pounds.
Cravings: Lots and lots of fruit.
Miss anything? Being able to interact with strangers without them asking when I'm due, and then saying, "Oh, you have the whooooole summer to go!" Yeah, I know.
Movement: She's rarely not moving. Kevin still can't feel kicks, even though I can sometimes see my whole belly jump!
Highs/Lows: Throwing my best friend's bridal shower. Closing on our house, and starting to see it come together. Planning the decor is really fun! But, Kevin is away again, which is a drag.
Looking forward to: Kevin coming home, moving, Hannah's wedding, and finding out whether or not I have gestational diabetes. Well, maybe not that last one :P

Birdie

This is a little anti-climactic since we've known for two weeks, but…after being so sure that Baby D was a boy…haha gotcha! SHE is healthy and strong and perfectly amazing. I am so in love and cannot wait to meet my little baby Birdie. (that's not what we're naming her, just the nickname that I've had since I found out about her existence. And now that we know she's a girl it doesn't sound weird.)

Our lovely ultrasound tech was able to tell us the gender less than 30 seconds after the wand touched my belly. But after that, Birdie wouldn't stay still! She rolled and punched and covered her face…we were lucky to get a clear profile picture. Speaking of punching, it was so crazy to be able to watch her moving (sometimes vigorously) and being able to feel it at the same time!

Even though she was so active, the tech and the doctor were able to see everything they needed to see. Her little heart was beating perfectly. Everything was where it needed to be. I am so thankful.
